Two USA Boxing-sanctioned events have been announced for the next couple months. On Saturday, Feb. 28, the NMLBC will be hosting "A Night of Boxing" at the Raymond G. Johnny Tapia arrested
Former five-time world champion Johnny Tapia has been arrested on a probation violation on felony drug charges. Probation and parole officers found the former champ at his home yesterday in possession of a controlled substance. Last April, Tapia pled guilty to felony drug charges and was sentenced to probation. He is being held at the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center until he appears before a judge.

Trout lands fight in Torreon
Undefeated Austin Trout (16-0, 12 KOs)
has landed a spot on the March 14 card in Torreon, Mexico. Trout will be taking on WBA No. 8 ranked Marco Avendano (27-6-1, 19 KOs) of Caracas, Venezuela, in a 12-round title eliminator. On the same card, El Paso's Abie Han (2-0, 2 KOs) will fight a four-rounder. The card is promoted by Nacho Huizar & KO Entertainment.
MMA card update
On the Feb. 20 Global Fury card at the Albuquerque Convention Center, the fighting Lovatos -- Lenny, Jr., & Mikey -- will not be fighting each other, but separate opponents, as they are cousins, and also in different weight divisions. Mikey will fight Paco Castillo and Lenny, Eddie Armendarez.
MMA card set for Feb. 20
Newly-formed promoter Global Fury Cagefighting today announced a Feb. 20 card at the Albuquerque Convention Center. The main event features Adam Oakey vs. Mano Otero. In the featured female bout, undefeated Albuquerque amateur Angelica Chavez will debut against Stephanie Palmer. Also on the lineup: Brazil's Rafael de Freitas vs. Joe Salazar; undefeated Lenny Lovato, Jr. vs. wrestling specialist Mikey Lovato, and more. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with first bell at 7:30. Tickets starting at $25 are available at Ticketmaster.com.
Rodriguez fights for NABA belt
El Paso's David Rodriguez (30-0, 28 KOs)
will get a shot at the NABA heavyweight title on March 14 in Torreon, Mexico, when he faces his biggest test in Robert Davis (32-9, 20 KOs), of Akron, Ohio. Davis has fought just once since 2006, and is 1-3 in his last four, with all three losses by knockout.

'Warrior Showdown 4' SATURDAY NIGHT
The Warriors Boxing Club will be hosting "Warrior Showdown 4," a 20 bout event on Jan 31. The card will be held at the National Guard Armory gym on Wyoming and Chico Ave. NE in Albuquerque. Cerrone loses split decision to Varner
World Extreme Cagefighting made its return to California to host its first event of 2009 where lightweight champion Jamie Varner successfully defended his title for the second time against a very tough Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone after being hit with an illegal knee. After four round of furious action, a downed Varner ate a knee from the challenger that badly disoriented him. As Varner could no longer continue, the judges decided the fight giving Varner the split decision victory. Scores read 49-46 twice in favor of the champion Jamie Varner. The dissenting official scored the botu 48-46 in favor of the challenger.

Holm wins over Lamare!
Tonight at Isleta Resort & Casino: In what was her most exciting performance to date, Albuquerque's Holly Holm (23-1-3, 6 KOs) outboxed--but did not outslug France's Myriam Lamare (16-3, 9 KOs) over ten rounds to retain her WIBA welterweight belt. Holm built up an early lead, landing crisp rights on her foe, but Lamare came alive in the late rounds, bombing Holm with big rights and looping lefts. The scorecards read 96-94, 98-92 and 97-93 for Holm. NewMexicoBoxing had it 96-94. In the scheduled eight-round co-main, Bloomfield jr. middle Joe "Ironman" Gomez (16-1-1, 8 KOs) stopped Jose Luis Cruz (12-15-3, 4 KOs), of San Diego, Calif., at 2:35 of round four. On the undercard: In a battle of debuting super bantams, Raymond "Hollywood" Montes (1-0, 1 KO) stopped Randy "Savage" Arrellin (0-1) at 2:09 of round one; in a slugfest, jr. middleweight Carlos "El Gallo" Sanchez (2-0) won a unanimous decision over debuting Mike Rodriguez (0-1) with scores of 40-36 twice and 39-37; welterweight Josh "Pitbull" Torres (3-1, 2 KOs) was impressive in his fourth round (1:11) stoppage of El Paso's Cornelius "Hard Times" Shuler (1-4). Wednesday, Jan. 21: The final press conference for Holm vs. Lamare will be held at Isleta, 2 p.m. The weigh-in is scheduled for Thursday, same time and place. On Fight Night, Friday, Jan. 23, the doors will open at 5 p.m. First bell is 7 p.m. sharp. Wednesday's presser and Thursday's weigh-in is open to the public; and there are still tickets left for Friday.
Upcoming GG tourneys
The 61st Annual New Mexico State Golden Gloves Tournament will be held in Clovis on March 27, 28 and 29 at the Roy Walker Community Center. Weigh-ins will be 9:00 am until noon on the 27th with the pairings to follow. All weights and divisions are invited. The open division champions will compete in the regional tournament in Denver on April 4th against the Colorado champions and the winners there will go on to the National tournament in Salt Lake City in May. Bloomfield's Joe Gomez (15-1-1, 7 KOs) will be fighting San Diego's Jose Luis Cruz (12-14, 4 KOs) on Jan. 23. Cruz is 1-9 in his last ten, and coming off a decision loss to Norberto Bravo. He last fought in N.M. in 2002, when Vernon Payne decisioned him in eight rounds.
El Paso card a no go
The fight card slated for the Don Haskins Center Feb. 7 has fallen through. The card was to have headlined unbeaten El Paso heavyweight David Rodriguez (30-0, 28 KOs) vs. Argentinean Gonzalo Omar Basile (37-4, 16 KOs), for the WBO Latino heavyweight belt, but while the card was being put together, Wednesday, Basile was arrested. A replacement opponent was not agreed upon and the card has been postponed for now.

Looks like boxing will finally return to the border. On Feb. 7, a fight card has been set for the Don Haskins Center. Lamare lands in U.S.
Myriam Lamare (16-2, 9 KOs), who takes on Holly Holm (22-1-3, 6 KOs) for the WIBA welterweight title Jan. 23, in Albuquerque, N.M., has landed in Los Angeles for final preparations. Lamare will work under former pound-for-pound queen Lucia Rijker before heading to Albuquerque. Holm, meanwhile, continues her training under Mike Winkeljohn at Jackson’s/Winkeljohn’s. The Fresquez-promoted card will take place at Isleta Resort & Casino.
'Hollywood' looking for a pro debut
Albuquerque bantamweight Raymond "Hollywood" Flores is hoping to make a pro debut on the Jan. 23 card at Isleta, but has been set back with opponents falling out.

Holm's foe speaks out!
Myriam Lamare, of Marseille, France,
will not only have former top pound-for-pound fighter Lucia Rijker in her corner Jan. 23, when she steps into the ring to take on Holly Holm, but says she is coming to win.
"I love challenge and Holly Holm is a very good fighter," Lamare said Tuesday from a press conference held at Isleta. "I have no anxiety and I stay focused. This is a big adventure." The judges at the Holm-Lamare bout will be out of state, and Lamare says, with the help of Rijker, the right strategy will be used to score her the win.

Zamora, Soto-Karass, Proa win in Rio Rancho
Tonight at the Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho, N.M., on the "Black Friday Fights" promoted by Top Rank & Romero Promotions: WBC #3 welterweight Jesus Soto-Karass (22-3-3, 16 KOs) destroyed veteran Hicklet Lau (20-18-2, 9 KOs) in less than two rounds. Soto-Karass, who is now unbeaten in 13 straight, battered Lau from pillar to post in round one, and picked up where he left off in round two, dropping Lau and getting a stoppage from referee Russell Mora moments later. Time was 1:59.

In the co-main, former welter contender and conqueror of Ray Sanchez III, Joaquin Zamora (17-2-1, 11 KOs) was knocked down in round one and got the worst of it in round two, but managed to edge Jose Gonzalez (12-5-1, 10 KOs) over ten by scores of 97-72, 95-94, 95-94.

Rodriguez wins again
This story is getting old: El Paso heavyweight David Rodriguez (30-0, 28 KOs) scored another easy first round knockout Saturday night in Nuevo Leon, Mexico. This time, the victim was Marvin Ray Jones (12-8, 9 KOs), of Smith County, Texas. Jones experienced his fourth straight loss now--all by knockout.

Filerio goes pro!
Heavyweight-turn-light-heavy Victor Filerio, of Bloomfield, N.M., will be turning pro tomorrow night in Phoenix, Ariz. As an amateur Filerio compiled a record of 64-28, winning several state titles, last year's U.S.A. Regionals and getting as far as the semi-finals at the Eastern Trials. Tomorrow night, Filerio will be taking on Bart Yerger of Phoenix. Yerger is 6-0, with 4 KOs, but has not fought for nine years. Filerio-Yerger was matched up when both fighters lost their original opponents yesterday. Yerger had been matched with Kevin Riding In, who sought to make a debut, while Filerio had been matched with David Maldonado, another debuter.

Also on the card is Albuquerque jr. welterweight Antonio Ortiz (1-0), who will take on Martin Vierra (3-2, 1 KO), of Phoenix. Ortiz turned pro last year on a card at Isleta, winning a decison over El Paso's Oscar Castillo.

Amateur card added as bonus!
Juan Romero, co-promoter of next Friday's "Black Friday" card at the Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho, along with Top Rank, is hoping to pack in a crowd of 5,000 for next week's show. "By putting on great fights--by matching up local fighters with 'contestants,' not 'opponents,' I'm hoping to rejuvenate the local boxing scene here," Romero said last night. Romero says he's also finishing up details on making the fight card a pro-am, with an afternoon series of amateur bouts. "New Mexico needs to come out and show their support," said Romero. "We need to show the state that boxing can draw as much of a crowd as mixed martial arts." More details on the amateur bouts and the final line-up to be posted soon!
DiPace to face Garcia in first six-rounder
On next weekend's big fight card at the Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho, hot Las Cruces prospect Sammy DiPace (4-0, 3 KOs) will be tackling Alex Garcia (5-5, 4 KOs) of Laredo, Texas. It'll be DiPace's first scheduled six-rounder.

Former USBA featherweight champion Martin Honorio (25-4, 13 KOs) scored a fifth round KO over former NABA champion Frankie Archuleta (25-6, 14 KOs), of Las Vegas, N.M., on Tuesday night at the Table Mountain Casino in Friant, California in a clash for the vacant IBA jr. lightweight title. Archuleta returns tonight
Tonight in Friant, Calif., at the Table Mountain Casino, Las Vegas' Frankie Archuleta (25-5, 14 KOs) stages his return when he takes on Martin Honorio (24-4, 12 KOs), of Bell, Calif., for the vacant IBA jr. lightweight title. Honorio was a late sub for Roger "Speedy" Gonzalez, who pulled out with an injury. It'll be Honorio's first fight since he was KO'd by Robert Guerrero last year, and Archuleta's first go since
September 2007.
Yesterday, both fighters weighed in at 130 lbs.
'Rumble on the Rez' this weekend!

Roger Gonzalez who was to fight Frankie Archuleta for the vacant IBA Jr lightweight title next Tuesday at Table Mountain Casino on a Roy Englebrecht Events promoted show, sustained a one inch cut on Tuesday during sparring at the Wild Card Gym. Replacing Gonzalez will be Mexico City's Martin Honorio, who will bring a 24-4, 12 KOs, record into the championship bout. Honorio trains at Azteca Gym in Bell, California and is managed by Arturo and Ricky Mota.
Marquez gets eight months suspension
Albuquerque's Archie Ray Marquez will have to weight until June 11, 2009 before he can fight again. At a Nevada State Athletic Commission hearing held Wednesday, Marquez was given an eight-month suspension that backtracks to his last fight, Oct. 11. After that fight, Marquez failed a drug test for diuretics. Not long after that fight, Marquez signed with fight promoter Gary Shaw. The Marquez camp says they will use the time to beef up sparring skills.

Rosales smoker results
It was another sold-out show Saturday night at the Rosales smoker in Albuquerque.
In the main event, Jessica Garcia won a unanimous decision over Nohime Barba for the AKBA kickboxing state title. Also: T. J. Trujillo KO'd Jason Quintana in round four; Victor Romero won a split decision over Mark Morganstern, and Adriana Velez won by walkover when her opponent, Candy Aldarete did not show up.
Gomez turned down
Fresquez Productions informs us that Bloomfield welter Joe Gomez has been turned down as an opponent for still-foeless Joaquin Zamora for the Nov. 28 Top Rank/Romero card.
Promoter Fresquez also says he has a card in the works for January, headlining Holly Holm.
