What’s Cookin’ a
Tony
Rosales of Rosales Boxing Gym is hoping that’s going to change with two
young boxers ready to turn pro, just as soon as he can get them a fight. The
first is 21-year-old Jorge Sosa, who lives in Albuquerque but makes the
20-minute ride to train in Los Lunas. Sosa is a kickboxer lookin’ to make
the transition into pro boxing. He’s got a 24-3 record as a kickboxer and
just a couple fights as an amateur boxer. Despite
his amateur boxing inexperience, Sosa says there are two reasons why he’s
ready to turn pro. One reason is that Sosa says he’s developed a natural
affinity for boxing that has him sidetracked from kickboxing. “I’ve
noticed that my boxing skills have become more precise than my kickboxing
skills,” says Sosa. “I feel in more control with boxing than kickboxing.
I’ve been kickboxing for seven years but I’ve always trained and had
ambition for boxing. Right now, I feel that I’m ready.” The
other reason for turning Sosa pro now has to do with his fighting style. “Jorge
has a real awkward style, real unorthodox,” says Sosa’s trainer, Tony
Rosales. “He’s gonna do all right, he’s a pretty tough kid.” Where
Sosa makes his debut is unknown right now, but he’s looking to fight at the
130-135 range. The
other prospect out of Rosales Gym is 18-year-old Jackie Chavez. Between
amateur kickboxing and boxing, Chavez has about 30 fights, with 9 losses.
Unlike Sosa, Chavez prefers kickboxing over boxing, but says she’s looking
for “new experiences. Something different.” Plus,
she says it’s too hard to get a fight as a kickboxer in New Mexico. Turning
to boxing, she hopes, will land her more fights. “Jackie’s
way overdue to turn pro,” Rosales said. “I was ready to turn her pro since
she turned 16. She’s got natural ability, she trains hard, and she’s
dedicated. She’s probably one of the best students I’ve developed as far
as fighting and dedication.” Chavez
walks around at 125-128 and plans to fight at 118-122. She'll be making her
pro debut on the Fresquez-Sky City Casino card on October 5th,
against Tucson's Christina Avitia (1-2).
