Sanchez made it a short night with a hard right that put Marcos
Rodriguez on the canvas in Round One. Rodriguez was not able to
get up by the count of 10.
Sanchez
goes to 8-1-1, all of his wins by way of KO. Rodriguez falls to
5-5. What's next for Sanchez? His promoter, Lenny Fresquez, took
the mike and called out a challenge to NBA Continental Champ
J.C. Linson from Santa Fe to dare step into the ring with
Sanchez.
Sanchez'
KO was not the only first-round stoppage. The first fight of the
night, between two pro debuts, El Paso's Bobby Joe Valdez &
Albuquerque's Danny Slade, ended not two seconds before the bell
rang. Valdez proved too vicious for Slade, who took a standing
8-count midway through the round and was also knocked down at
the end of the round. When he did get up, it was on wobbly legs.
Slade was taking a beating, though, and the ref took a good look
at Slade and called it quits.
El Paso
scored another victory against Albuquerque in the next fight
when Adan Hernandez (2-0) decisioned Tommy Aragon (2-1) after
four rounds. It looked as if Aragon had Round One; but Hernandez
came back strong in the second round and dominated the rest of
the fight, staggering Aragon in the 3rd Round and also knocking
him down soon after. Hernandez got a warning from the ref,
though, for hitting Aragon after he was down.
Yet
another El Paso vs. Albuquerque fight was next: Joseph Brady
(3-0) vs. Earl Large (0-1). It was a grudge match for Brady;
Large had beaten him before as amateurs. It was to be nice
payback for Brady as he outboxed and outclassed Large through four
rounds. Although he was downed in Round One, and took a standing
8 in Round Two, Large was able to survive the battle. The best
exchange came after the fight, actually, when Brady let loose a
shot that landed after the bell sounded. Large countered with a
punch of his own and the two went at it until the ref broke it
up.
Another
knockout followed in the next bout. Kenny "Loverboy"
Maldonado (6-1, 5 KO's) of Albuquerque made easy game of Juan
Pablo Castillo (0-2) of Las Cruces. Kenny was clearly the
aggressor and it appeared as if Castillo was intimidated by him.
He mostly backpedaled--until Maldonado knocked him to the floor
at 1:17 into the second round. Castillo stayed down for some
time until the ring doctor checked him out.
A rough
battle between veterans finished off the undercards. Eric
Holland (24-27-3, 7 KO's) of Tacoma, WA took on Martin Quiroz
(20-51, 15 KO's) of Juarez, Mexico. This bout was an all-out
war; the two traded hard power punches for six rounds, although
Holland, the quicker of the two, had the edge and landed with
greater accuracy. A unanimous decision went to Holland.
